Introducing JPS Medical Department

Mrs Jo Kitching and JPS Student

The school medical office is located in the corridor opposite the administrative offices. Medical department is manned by full time and part time qualified personnel.

If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child at school please feel free to come and speak to us.

The following notes are a brief summary of the school's health matters which you may find helpfull:

1. ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES; Should your child require emergency treatment, every effort will be made to contact you. To assist, we need to stress the importance of keeping the nurses informed of any change of contact details. In the case of a serious emergency, an ambulance will be called and your child ill be taken to the nearest hospital.

2. MEDICAL FORMS; When your child starts at JPS you will be given medical forms to fill in, please return these promptly with all medical information provided. It is of utmost importance that the school is made aware of any conditions your child has and any medication they are receiving. This may affect how they are treated in case of an emergency.

3. CONCENT FOR CALPOL AND MEDICINES AT SCHOOL; If your child is in pain or has a fever at school, we can give Calpol to relieve their symptoms. You will be required to give signed consent on the health form for the school nurse to administer it.

STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO CARRY MEDICINES WITH THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. If your child needs medication at school, please hand it in to us in the clinic and we will administer it to your child, this includes inhalers. Please ensure that we have an Epi Pen for your child if they have a life threatening allergy.

4. ILLNESS; To concentrate and function effectively at school, good health is one of the most important aspects. It is therefore important that if your child is not well, they should rest at home and recuperate fully before returning to school. IF YOUR CHILD REQUIRES CALPOL IN THE MORNING THEY SHOULD NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL.

These measures are set in place to reduce the incidence of cross infection of other students and staff. The medical team will not hesitate to send a student home if they are unwell or considered to be infectious.

5. SCHOOL MEDICALS; The department of health requires students to have a medical examination in years FS1, YR 1, YR 4, and all new students to the school. This is carried out by our school doctor and is a basic, non invasive procedure. Your child will receive a urine bottle prior to the medical, please send in a fresh morning specimen. If any areas of concern are found you will receive a medical report. You have the choice to exclude your child from the school medical, however you will then need to take them to your own doctor for the medical and give us a copy of the report, as this is a municipal requirement.

6. IMMUNIZATIONS; Every effort should be made to have your child’s vaccinations up to date prior to starting at JPS. The Department of Health requires that you submit a copy of your child’s immunization record to the school nurse. This will be checked in accordance with the U.A.E immunization schedule and you will be advised of outstanding vaccines. We do not do vaccinations at J.P.S, this should be done privately. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and BCG are a few of the vaccines that your child  may not have had, but are required in the UAE.

7. SUN CARE; Skin cancer is a serious concern, especially in Dubai where the sun shines almost all the time. Heat exhaustion is a potential problem and steps must be taken to prevent it. It is compulsory for students to wear a hat outside and we enforce a ‘no hat no play policy’. We encourage you to apply sunscreen to your child before school, especially on P.E. days and for school outings.

Students are encouraged to drink water regularly at school and drinking water is available at numerous points around the school. Please re-enforce this at home.

8. SNACK BOXES; To support your child’s concentration at school, please encourage them to have nutritious food in their snack boxes. Students who eat breakfast and have a nutritious diet at school will manage to perform better.

9. USE OF TOILET POLICY; All children should be toilet trained in order to start school in September. If your child has frequent accidents at school, JPS reserves the right to request your Childs withdrawal from the school until they are fully toilet trained.

PLEASE NOTE:
DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE ARE STUDENTS WITH NUT ALLERGIES, NUTS OR FOOD CONTAINING NUT PROTIEN ARE FORBIDDEN. A peanut allergy can result in a potentially fatal Anaphylactic reaction. The parents of these children trust you ensure that no nuts are sent to school .

Thank you for your cooperation,
School Nurse
