Literacy Support Teacher
My name is Mrs. Ellen Kiernan and I am a Literacy Support Teacher at JPS Connect. I have been a primary teacher for 10 years, starting my career at an inner city school in London, before moving on to Dubai to take a position at JPS as a Year 5 Class Teacher. I obtained my Postgraduate Teaching Qualification from Nottingham Trent University after graduating from York St John with a degree in Performance. Originally, I ran my own small performance company where I focused on community outreach in schools, running a government funded project to teach creative arts to children who had Childhood Behavioral and Emotional Difficulties, this experience inspired me to become a Primary School Teacher. Throughout my teaching career, I have continuously tried to incorporate my creative background into my lessons and activities.
Over the past 10 years, I have sought to embed inclusive practices into my teaching and to find opportunities to provide timely, friendly and positive interventions wherever they are required. I am a firm believer in empowerment in the classroom, to be able to help a child feel empowered, positive and in charge of their own learning is a joy. Throughout my career, I have worked with various agencies to develop their teaching resources to be engaging, educational and inclusive, these include: Children in Need, the Times Educational Supplement and Cadbury’s. I also work closely with the Senior Leadership Team at JPS to support the teachers of GEMS schools in regards to embedding HPL (High Performance Learning) practices into their lessons and wider school ethos.
