Student Leadership

At Jumeirah Primary School, the development of lifelong leadership skills is one of many learning opportunities offered to all students. From Year 3, students have the opportunity to apply for a plethora of official student leadership positions. Having effective student leaders supports the development of responsible learners, gives pupils a voice in decision-making and school improvement, creates a positive school environment and encourages students to model the JPS values. Positive student leadership opportunities and experiences help our students become independent and responsible citizens, making sure they are prepared to become lifelong learners. 

Our Aim

Our purpose at JPS is to ensure all students are fully supported and encouraged to:

  • Develop their leadership skills to enhance the JPS community 
  • Demonstrate respect for each person and the environment
  • Strive for unity at JPS
  • Aim to be outstanding role models for other students

Leadership Positions

  • Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl

    Lead Teacher: Mr. Isabelle

    As part of the application process for Head/Deputy Head Boy/Girl, students are asked to propose an area for their leadership team to focus on or identify something they could improve in school, thereby making a positive contribution.

    Their role includes:

    • Representing the school at public functions throughout the year
    • Being an internal and external ambassador for the school
    • Public speaking at various events
    • Reporting to Mrs. Higgins, Principal/CEO and the JPS Senior Leadership Team regularly
    • Attending School Council meetings
  • Extended Student Leaders

    Lead Teacher: Mr. Isabelle

    As part of the application process for Head/Deputy Head Boy/Girl, students are asked to propose an area for their leadership team to focus on or identify something they could improve in school, thereby making a positive contribution. Candidates who are unsuccessful in gaining the position of Head/Deputy Head may have their proposals considered for an alternative Student Leader role. Other candidates can be self-nominated or nominated by a teacher.

    To be considered for this role, students need to have a proposal for how they can make a positive contribution to affect real change within their school. The possibilities for this role are unlimited and give students a chance to demonstrate and develop leadership skills in an area determined by them.

    In class and outside of school, children should be:

  • House Captains

    Lead Teacher: Mr. Isabelle

    There are two House Captains and two Deputy House Captains for each House (sixteen in total). Students in Year 3 to Year 6 vote from the nominations and children with the most votes are elected. There may be a tie between two candidates in which case they may share the role.

    House Captains should embody the values of the JPS family, have an exemplary recent record of good behaviour and model the JPS Code of Conduct at all times.

    Candidates will also:

      • Is confident

  • Sports Leaders

    Lead Teacher: Mr. Isabelle

    Sports Leaders are selected by the PE Department. Children who display potential leadership skills in both lessons and extra-curricular clubs are identified by teachers and then selected after a discussion within the PE team. An invitation is sent to the children selected and if they feel they can commit to the responsibilities below, they accept the positions.

    • Demonstrates empathy during team games - can collaborate effectively
    • Models Meta-thinking (strategy planning) during team games and PE lessons
    • Is a critical and logical thinker
    • Is dedicated to work hard to improve through: 
      • Deliberate practise
      • Resilience and
      • Perseverance
    • Is organised and shows initiative
    • Has an exemplary record of good behaviour and models the JPS Code of Conduct.
    • Member of a JPS sports team is preferable but not mandatory as candidates may have sporting interests outside of school

    Their role includes:

    • Assisting on Sports Day with points and places
    • Helping with the Swim Gala
    • Attending one club per week to lead warm-ups
    • Taking on the role of equipment manager
    • Attending some fixtures to help PE staff with warm-ups
    • Leading warm-ups and cool-downs in lessons and at extra-curricular clubs
    • Acting as a positive role model and inspiring others to take part in sport
  • Wellbeing Leaders

    Teacher: Mr. Hughes

    As part of the application process for being a Well-being Leader, students are asked to answer the Google Form questions giving their reason for wanting to be a Well-being Leader and the initiatives and ideas they think they could bring to the JPS Well-being committee. From there, the children present their reasons to their classes, after which a voting election takes place. Classes choose one boy and one girl from each of the classes in Year 4 to Year 6 to represent them. 

    We have created a Well-being Committee made up of forty one student Well-being Leaders from all of the classes in Years 4, 5 and 6. 

    The Wellbeing Leaders are responsible for the delivery of the weekly Well-being Wednesday theme. The themes and topics chosen are in-line with the whole school Wellbeing initiatives. 

    The leaders promote the topic through discussions, activities or games, all of which are delivered by the students for the students. At break times, the students also lead socially-distanced practical games. 

    The Well-being Leaders meet regularly with Mr. Hughes and Mrs. De Mascarel to discuss the topics and ideas that they have to improve school Health and Well-being. 

    Well-being Leaders will demonstrate:

    • Compassion towards other students
    • Resilience
  • Eco-Warriors

    Teacher: D. Richardson

    Children who are passionate about the environment and have practical ideas about how to implement change at JPS are encouraged to apply for the role of Eco-Warrior. Students complete the Google Form and are then selected to be part of the committee based on their suggestions and ideas. 

    We have an Eco-Warrior Committee made up of 40 students from the classes in Years 4,5 and 6. The Eco-Warriors meet regularly with Miss Richardson and the operations team to discuss the ideas that they have to improve sustainability in the school and the wider community. 

    The Eco-Warriors are responsible for sharing information with their classmates, rolling out initiatives, and encouraging their peers to follow the Eco-Code. The Eco-Warriors promote sustainability through discussions and activities, all of which are delivered by the students to the students. 

    Eco-Warrior leaders will demonstrate:

    • A passion for the sustainability
    • Good communication skills
    • Confidence to express themselves
    • Empathy towards others and the environment
    • Resilience and perseverance

    Our Eco-Warriors in Action

  • High Performance Leadership 

    At JPS we have High Performance Leadership Student Ambassadors, a set of students nominated by their class teachers and current HPL leaders in Term2, Year 5 and continuing throughout Year 6.

    To be considered for this role, students must:

    • Demonstrate a good understanding of the HPL competencies and what they look like in practice
    • Model the HPL competencies and know next steps for developing them
    • Be organised and show initiative
    • Have an exemplary, recent record(the previous yr) of good behaviour and modelling the JPS Code of Conduct.
    • Work well with others
    • Demonstrate good public speaking

    Procedure for selection

    Open to Y5 and 6 students - children are identified and nominated by class teachers, final lists decided by Exisiting HPL leaders, Year Leaders and APs

    Roles and responsibilities

    • To represent JPS at HPL events - ie. Parent info sessions, Teacher PD (at JPS and other schools)
    • To assist HPL leads and teachers in identifying HPL in school through:
    • Demarcating it on displays
    • Describing where they have seen it in lessons
    • Creating videos about the competencies
    • Developing the stories and illustrations for use in school
  • School Council

    The School Council at JPS has representation across Years 3 to Year 6. Each class votes for a representative and Deputy School Council representative; this means that there are 14 children from each year group and 56 in total! During meetings, the School Council members discuss what improvements they can make to the school, including resources to use at Break Times, as well as any other events that they are involved in planning. The School Council is a great way for children to develop their leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
