The French Department at GEMS Jumeirah Primary School
The French Department at GEMS Jumeirah Primary School is led by the Head of French Madame Crossland along with Specialist Teaching Assistant Madame Bariman.
The children in years 3-6 have one French lesson per week. Outside of these lessons, students have access to a variety of learning resources in order to promote their independence and maximise their progress. These resources include short video tutorials as well as language specific websites which challenge and extend their knowledge. A wide range of different topics are covered over the course of their language learning journey at the school and the students develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
During French lessons, there is a focus on key skills such as collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking. The students progress from being able to use single words to constructing full sentences including a variety of WOW words such as adjectives, connectives and expressions of time. They also begin extending their written and spoken French by giving reasons for their ideas and opinions.
Students at GEMS Jumeirah Primary School enjoy challenging and fun activities which stimulate and encourage their learning of French. Above all, the aim is to instill a love of learning languages, ensure high levels of motivation, engagement and enthusiasm displayed by our students when it comes to this subject.
A variety of other language learning opportunities including a KS1 after school activity, which introduces students to different languages and cultures. Peer-led learning is promoted in order to enable the older students in year 5 and 6 to develop leadership skills by planning, resourcing and delivering French lessons to students in KS1.
The French native speakers at GEMS Jumeirah Primary School follow a different programme of study to the other students in their class. They have the opportunity to work in small groups completing suitably challenging work to enhance their knowledge of French. This work is personalised to meet their individual needs and particular focus is given to reading, writing and grammar. In addition, an after school activity for French native speakers. These lessons, offered to students in years 1-6, are delivered by the Language First Institute via Academy Plus and are tailor-made lessons based on the French curriculum.
